Highly-coveted defensive lineman Breeland Speaks became the 21st commitment to the Ole Miss Rebels’ 2014 pledge class Monday.
Speaks committed to Ole Miss at a press conference held at Callaway High School in Jackson in front of a gathering of family, friends, his high school coaches and the media. Speaks chose the Rebels over offers from Mississippi State, Arkansas, Florida State, Louisiana-Lafayette, South Carolina and Southern Miss.
"First of all, Ole Miss was my first offer," Speaks said. "Since then, they have been pressing me hard. Since they offered me, it's felt like home.
"Why elongate something when you can go ahead and get it over with? I was taking my time and going through the process.
"Ole Miss doesn't say you're going to be this or that. If you go out there, you can earn a starting spot, if you work hard.
"I have a great relationship with (Ole Miss recruiter) Derrick Nix. It's great. I don't have to worry about anyone calling and asking where I'm going. My commitment is strong with Ole Miss."
The 6-3, 270-pounder is rated as the No. 36 defensive tackle prospect in the nation by the 247Composite and the No. 11 overall recruit from the state of Mississippi for the Class of 2014.
Speaks is the fourth commitment to Ole Miss from Callaway High School in the 2014 class, giving the Rebels a clean sweep of the Jackson school’s SEC talent. He joins Callaway teammates Roderick Taylor, Dayall Harris and Ronald Walker in the Rebels’ 2014 pledge class.
Speaks is coming off back-to-back unofficial visit weekends to Ole Miss, having visited for both the Texas A&M and LSU games. He is Ole Miss’ 12th in-state commitment in the 2014 class.
