Tragedy struck the Ole Miss football family on Wednesday when offensive lineman Park Stevens was killed in a car crash.
News broke about the accident late Wednesday afternoon.
It is believed that Stevens was the only fatality in the accident.
Stevens, a sophomore, was a transfer from East Central Mississippi Community College. He went through spring drills with the Rebels. He was a native of Columbus, Miss., and a graduate of New Hope High School.
Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze sent the following message out Wednesday evening via Twitter: “Our Rebel family and team are so saddened at the loss of one of our teammates, Park Stevens. May God be with his family and our team.”
Ole Miss players also expressed their sympathies via Twitter.
“We lost a brother,” tweeted senior running back Jeff Scott.
“Lost one of my best friends today. Please pray for the Stevens family. Miss you already buddy,” tweeted senior center Evan Swindall.
“He was a great friend and teammate…” tweeted senior tackle Pierce Burton.
Heath Sellers, a former coach at New Hope High School, remembered Stevens as one of the finest student-athletes he had ever been around.
“I coached Park at New Hope. Man. My heart is broken. The finest kid I’ve ever been around,” Sellers said.
“I had the privilege of being around him at my time at New Hope as a teacher and coach and he even played tennis for me at New Hope. He was such a great young man who was a joy to be around by everyone. I just talked with him a week ago since he was in Oxford getting ready to play football at Ole Miss and we were talking about going fishing. Life is so short.
“He was one of the finest kids I’ve been around in my four years of coaching. He always had a big smile on his face, always.”
The Tupelo Daily Journal newspaper is reporting this evening a fatality accident that occurred around 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon in Chickasaw County at the intersection of Egypt Road and Highway 45A involving a pick-up truck and an 18-wheeler. The Mississippi Highway patrol, however, had not released the name of the deceased as of this writing.
Ole Miss releases statement from head coach Hugh Freeze... "“Our team is hurting tonight with the loss of Park. He was a tremendous young man that was loved by his teammates and coaches, and Rebel Nation will never forget him. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Stevens’ family, his friends, our team and all those he touched during his life.”
