College Football Playoff

  • For those college football nutjobs like me who can’t stand the offseason, this might be for you. With all the talk of a college football playoff in the news lately I decided to get creative with the only simulation tools I have: a PS3 and NCAA 12. Using the final BCS regular season standings for seeding; I have created a 24 team playoff (24 teams because the BCS standings doesn’t extend to 32) that I will simulate to see who virtually would have been the national champion. First off, I am in not in favor at all of a 24 team playoff. This is not conducive in reality. My playoff starts on December 17 (two weeks after the conference title games) and extends until January 14th. The Top 8 seeds all have first round byes and the higher seeded team will host until the semi-finals. The semi-finals will be played at the Orange and Sugar Bowls. The championship will be played at the Rose Bowl. I have gone to great extents to make this simulation as legitimate as possible including roster changes due to injury or suspension and even accurate weather conditions at the site where the games would have been played. Check it out here: http://short-sideoption.blogspot.com/ , it’s a good source of entertainment in the off-season!

  • Pretty cool, it will be interesting to follow and pass the time til spring ball. Now for the real question. When do we see a simulation of what our 2013 Rebels will look like with Coach Freeze!?! :)

  • @Bandit: Thank you for checking it out! I tell you what, I could plug in Arkansas St's playbook and see what could have happened this year if you would have had Freeze in 2012 :) Are the Rebel fan's pretty excited around Oxford for Freeze? I watched Arkansas St play multiple times last year (because I'm a College Football nut and will watch about any game on) and I really liked his style of play. It'll be interesting to see what he can do with SEC talent.

  • @Rebel_30: I like your enthusiasm! I'm anxious to see how he does, I was in the opinion this past year that he was one of the best up and coming coaches out there. Very fundamental, no gimicks; I like that. I've asked this to a few other SEC fan bases; but how do Rebel fans feel about the expansion teams?

Haven't really heard alot of discussion on them. I for one am excited about competing with what i would consider non-conference schools. I'm anxious to see how TAM and Mizz will hold up having 8 sec match ups.

  • Not sure how accurate the simulation would be, given all the issues last year but hey it'll give us something to talk about til spring ball! Haha.. I think the vast majority of rebel nation is pretty excited about Freeze. There were some who weren't in the beginning but he won most over with his opening press conference and 24/7 work ethic. His enthusiasm for football and Ole Miss was a much needed lift for the program right now. I cant wait to watch some basketball on grass! Hopefully the team, especially the D will find thier identity and a new level of intensity. As for expansion, I'm not sure it was needed but I'm happy with the teams. A&M is a great program but being in the west they will be fighting for the middle of the pack. Missouri has the best chance to make some noise but will likely finish 4th, 3rd at best in the East.

  • @bandit: Yeah, A&M is going to have a tough go in the West. That division is easily the toughest in all college football. I did run a simulation with Freeze's playbook for the 2011 year just to see how it turned out (like you said I'm not familiar enough with the Ole Miss roster and the injury situations so I just ran the simulation as with the roster as it was supposed to be in the spring)....turns out Ole Miss goes 7-5 with Freeze's playbook this past year. Wins over BYU, S. Illinois, Vanderbilt, Fresno St, Auburn, Kentucky, Louisiana Tech. The Egg Bowl also went to OT opposed to how it turned out this year. Granted, this means little to nothing about what he will do next year; but its fun to talk about!
