South Panola Offensive line

  • Watching the game this afternoon i noticed that the coaches had moved Deon Mix to the left guard position. Deon made some good blocks but he still looks raw at the position. Mix is a big guy that looks to have all the potential in the world, long arms and a wide bottom will be key for him.
There was another young man that stood out to me on that offensive line, he goes by the name Lighting. Lighting plays the right tackle positon for the South Panola Tigers, and Issac Gross thanks he is one of the best out there and that was enough for me.

I've come to the conclusion that the State of Mississippi has some of the biggest lineman yet the rawest talent in the country. I think it's the lack of speed and technique that our offensive linemen are missing. I'm not pointing the finger but somebody needs to get to work. Offensive and defensive linemen use to be the pride of Mississippi, lets get back to those times. There's to many big bodies around this state for me to keep hearing, Mississippi has limited linemen prospects.

Can somebody please tell me what has happened to the Mississippi Delta?

  • What you mean what has happened to the Mississippi Delta? Looks good in Bolivar County if you ask me.

  • I'm from the Delta and Bolivar County is not the only county in the Delta. The Delta has produced some great ball players and yes i respect Bolivar County. It's one of the few places over there that's seeing some success. Please don't think in no way that I'm discounting our area, but as a whole it has fallen off. D-1 Coaches used to camp out in the MS Delta. Their are some programs that are going strong, but it's the ones where the entire communities are still in touch with the programs (Rosedale).

So I pray there was no harm done by the post. I'm just not use to the massive flow of talent that is gone or uncoached in my home area.

  • No offensive taken. It just seemed as if you had a recent encounter in the Delta that spark your comment. I only reference Bolivar County because that's where I live (Rosedale). And as you said, our program is still at its strong point. Clarksdale,Rosedale, Cleveland, and Greenville come to mind when you think of Delta football. But the majority of the Delta schools have all been successful at one point or another. D-1 coaches have frequently visited Rosedale lately. We've had 11 guys that played either D1, D1-AA, or DII in the past 9 years. Another 12 played JUCO during those years. Then four more signed back in February. It could be some that I forgot but that is still good for a 2A school. I think the two biggest factors; one you mentioned is coaching and the other sadly is due to grades. Colleges cant take risks with students that might not qualify. And thats not just in the Delta, Mississippi as a whole needs to address this issue.

  • Other than South Panola (part Delta), I will take a Bolivar County all-star team against the rest of the Delta anytime! The quality of the coaching (Leland Young @ Rosedale and Benoit, Leroy Byars @ Cleveland East Side) has had a lot to do with the success of some of the Bolivar County teams in the past. You have to remember that Rosedale and Benoit were once a single team a decaide ago. After Coach Young retired, he came back and litterally started the high school football program at Benoit (Ray Brooks). Since then, both have won state titles in their respective divisions. I know he would be real proud of both programs. A school consolidation bill that will combine Shaw, Benoit and Rosedale is on the governor's desk. Nobody from Bolivar County (me included) really likes the idea of consolidation, but the rest of the state better watch out in football, basketball and track.

If you bring that all-star team over to Clarksdale we would have taken their heads off. You better check your records. Rosedale may be the only team in Bolivar County to beat a Clarksdale team.

  • I lived in the Delta for about two years. I worked at a manufacturing facility in a town called Shaw betwen Cleveland and Greenville. Was there only a short time then went back home to Memphis. The football was good, but the coaching for the most part was bad along with the resources. Rosedale was very good, and I second the above post about Leland Young. He was a great one. From what I read, Rosedale (I think it is West Bolivar now) is still good. From what I remember about Cleveland High, it seemed a school that just could never pull it together. Most of that town's talent was split between Cleveland and Eastside. As far as talent goes, it is everywhere in the Delta. There are more skill position players at Leland than at Briarcrest in Memphis. It is an attitude of defeatism that permeates the entire Delta region. The high school programs just do not put in the sweat required to build a program like happens at your better schools where I live in Memphis and in other parts of Mississippi. The talent is there. Those in charge do not know how to develop it in most cases. Fire away boys. I will answer all comers.gun

  • Been there one on one .... it was even dangerous getting back on the bus. Actually, nothing was worse than showing up for a home game at Greenville High in the late 70's - early 80's. They had size, speed and numbers. Either now or then, you could give me Cleveland combined with Cleveland East Side (still less than the student populaiton of Clarksdale) and I would take that bet.

We beat every team in Bolivar County my Sr. Year. I think we've(Clarksdale) only lost to Rosedale twice in about 15 years or so and those 2 L's have been recent.

Clarksdale use to be king of the Delta when in came to Football, we're coming back to regain that top spot.

  • I toured the Clarksdale facilities last year for something at work. Their strength and conditioning program was first class.

  • I wouldn't be so quick to say Clarksdale was the king of the Delta when it came to Football during the Leland Young era in the 1980s and early 1990s. West Bolivar and Clarksdale didn't start playing until Leland Young tenure ended near the mid 90s. I know for a fact they haven't played each other more than ten times. Clarksdale has the most head to head wins but that might be different if the teams had played against each other during Coach Young tenure. Coach Johnson currently at West Bolivar has done a great job of following the footsteps of the coach he played under as well. Also, Charleston is part of the Delta. Coach Vance has done a good job there. I don't want to make it sound as if there isn't anymore good coaches in the Delta.

  • There are good coaches in the Delta, but I won't go as far as to say there are a lot of good coaching staffs. Rosedale and Clarksdale are exceptions to the rule. Cleveland High worries to much about what last names are on the field to be successful and a city of less than 12,000 residents is trying to support two high schools (for why I wonder? that is rhetorical question). Clarksdale is finding out how hard it is to get back after you've lost it, which is why 2012 will be so interesting at South Panola. First class in the Delta is not equivocal to first class in other parts of Mississippi. Lifting weights in the summer time three days a week, which is what most Delta schools call their strength program, doesn't measure up to what is happening below I20 and east of I55. Case in point, just check out what Delta schools have serious power lifting programs. Football and power lifting should go hand and hand. It doesn't in the Delta.

  • I played for Lafayette 97- 2000 Clarksdale was def King of the Delta and North half as far as that goes these days bigcat is right its not on the same level

    Oxfordawg

  • There are far too many private schools here in the delta. That puts this part of the state (live in Cleveland) at a disadvantage. The kids are spread too thin. I am an MAIS official. I see alot of talent in the private school ranks. If this area were like the east half of the state and not have so many private schools then the talent would be pooled together. Not alot of BIG kids in private schools here but alot of skill players.

No one is questioning the level of coaching that the guys are getting and have gotten in Bolivar County. I think Coach Johnson is doing and will continue to do a great job. West Bolivar's program is by far the best y'all got in the county. During the Leland Young era in the early 90s Clarksdale was a power house. Coach Young to me is one of the best if not the top high school coaches from the Delta.
